On 26th, tomorrow night, AsianArt Ensemble will world-premiere my new piece 'Striking a match momentarily I see the foggy ocean' for shakuhachi, daegeum, shamisen, koto, gayageum, violin, viola, cello and contrabass, at Elisabeth-Kirche, Berlin-Mitte!

明日ベルリンで、AsianArt Ensembleに委嘱をいただいた、尺八、テグム、三味線、箏、ガヤグム、ヴァイオリン、ヴィオラ、チェロ、コントラバスのための新作《マッチ擦るつかのま海に》が初演されます。

This piece is one of my pieces from "Voice" series. This time, my question was not to think about what a difference between their instruments from Korea, Japan and Europe is, but what a common of them is. I knew it was just in the course of nature but, I realized again that the law of making sound and the gesture of making vibrations (pluking, rubbing, or bowing strings; blowing pipes etc) were always same on all instruments of the world. Then, performer's gestures to have effects on instruments suddenly got linked with a gesture to strike a match in my mind, and it reminded me of one of his poems by Shuji Terayama: 'Striking a match momentarily I see the foggy ocean --- is there a motherland I can dedicate myself to?' So I decided to write musical world led by a distinctive sound which represents striking a match.

この曲は「聲」シリーズのひとつにあたりますが、韓国、日本、西洋の楽器の違いを探るのでなく、共通点は何だろうと自分に問いかけることから作曲が始まりました。発音の原理というのはどの世界のどの楽器も同じで、弦をはじいたりこすったり、管に息を入れたりして振動を起こすと音が得られるという、ごく当たり前のことを改めて考え直していると、突然、自分の思考のなかで、演奏者が楽器に働きかけるジェスチャーがマッチを擦るジェスチャーと結びつき、寺山修司さんのひとつの歌が思い出されました。
《マッチ擦るつかのまの海に霧深し身捨つるほどの祖国はありや》
そして、マッチを擦るひとつの音から少しずつ世界が広がっていくような音楽を書こうと決めました。
