Khaen is the bamboo free-reed mouth organ of Laos and Northeast Thailand. I’ve had some of my works with Japanese sho which is relative to khaen, but there are lots of differences between them. So it was really challenging for me to write this piece. When I compose, I always try to enter deeply in the idiom of the instrument. Learning how the instrument produces sounds gives me the structure to compose. In this piece, I tried to focus on a kind of stereo effects and polyphonic things, which are led by the layout of the pitches on khaen.
‘Mystische Miniature’ was written, inspired by Paul Klee’s 1922 painting of the same name. I started to think about this piece while I was in Lucerne and I saw that Klee's painting there. After coming back to Tokyo, I've been looking at the postcard of that painting every day and I finished this piece. So I named this piece ‘Mystische Miniature’ and I’ve felt it’s perfect for a khaen’s piece. That’s because the instrument khaen itself is exactly the thing of “Mystische Miniature.”

ケーンはラオスやタイ北東のリード楽器で、日本の笙の祖先ともいわれています。笙を編成にふくむ作品は今までにいくつか書いていますが、さすがにケーンの作品を書くのは初めて。色々と試行錯誤の結果、ケーンのポリフォニックな面に極限まで迫った作品になりました。
《Mystische Miniature》は、パウル・クレーの同名の作品からインスピレーションを受けています。この曲について考え始めたとき、私はルツェルンにいて、ローゼンガルト美術館でこのクレーの絵に出会い、東京に戻ってきてからも毎日そのポストカードを眺めていました。クレーのこの作品には、大きく数字の「1」が描かれています。ルツェルンでのアカデミーの合間をぬって、ラオスやタイに想いを馳せながらケーンについて考え、同じ時期に声明の作品の整理もして...、さらに、多くの大事な出会い、流れ込んでくる様々な国の様々な人たちの考えや感情、ぐちゃぐちゃのまま私のなかに積み重なった色々なものを全部まとめ、なんとかしてひとつの形にできたらと思いました。また、《Mystische Miniature》というタイトルは、ケーンのための作品にはぴったりだと思いました。ケーンという楽器自体が神様のようなもので、まさに《Mystische Miniature》そのものであるからです。

I'm very happy and honored that Chris asked me to write a new piece for khaen. Khaen inspired me a lot and I really enjoyed to write this piece. Have a great concert!! I'm keeping my fingers crossed in Tokyo!
